Kat Stevens is a slightly insecure, mostly bored technical writer who likes her cat a lot more than her boss. She hasn't laid eyes on her great aunt Abigail since she was eight, so she's stumped when she inherits Abigail's house in the small hamlet of Alpine Grove.Kat's uncomplicated life gets decidedly less so when she discovers the inheritance comes with some hairy conditions four dogs and five cats that her aunt wanted her to love as her own. Of course, the house smells like a barn--with a touch of antique skunk--and, naturally, has serious roof issues. And that's before the three-legged cat gets stuck in the wall and the shower goes kablooey.

When Kat meets Joel, an unemployed techie type with no love lost for his sister, Kat looks past his obvious flaws, given his timely and desirable skill set a talent for fixing things (and his own tools). Despite out-of-control dogs, cat fights, dust dinosaurs, massive spiders and an old grizzled hippie passed out in the yard, Kat discovers the tranquility of the forests of Alpine Grove starting to seep into her soul. And why she can't she stop thinking about Joel?

Note Chez Stinky is a full-length novel (300 pages/80,000 words) that is Book #1 of the Alpine Grove Romantic Comedies. It's a feel-good novel that appeals to people who enjoy a little light romance and quirky animal stories.

Kat is a strong even tempered woman.
Joel is a laid back geek.
Chemistry was there but not really strong.
There was too much about the dogs, cats and house in this story.
There really wasn't any romance. All of a sudden they were in love. I just found the romance to be totally disconnected from the story about the dogs, cats and house.
Lots of extra people that have nothing to do with the romance.

Katherine "Kat" Stevens is a technical writer and a cat owner. Kat has a huge proposal dumped on her at the last minute and learns that her Great Aunt Abigail passed away as well. Kat travels to Alpine Grove to meet her new charges. Kat's heart swells seeing her new canine charges. Kat has great memories of being here. How will Kat cope with all the changes? Find out in Chez Stinky.

This new to me author provided an unique world filled with friend's of the four legged variety. I was pleasantly surprised by this book would be an understatement. Characters whether human or four legged variety were wholly unique and charming to boot.
This story was very drawn out. Kat inherits a house from her great aunt whom she has not seen in years. When she shows up she is told that she can have the house and the money only if she keeps all of her great aunts animals. In the process, kat finds out that the house is falling apart and her career is dead and her old apartment in the city was sold and she has to move. So her life is flipped upside down. Then the guy helping her fix the house flakes on her and she asks for a favor from Cindy (dog sitter) if her brother Joel will help her. Slowly they get involved.
The story takes a while to get into it. But I am looking forward to book 2. There is love in the book but don't expect details on love scenes or peoples bodies.
I don't understand why Susan Daffron wrote this book. There's very little in the way of plot, characterization or emotional exposition; there's not a lot of dialogue among the characters; there's very little description of people, places, or events; there is some humor, but it's mostly of the very mild goofball sort what is the point? The book is not badly written from a technical point of view, it's just not at all interesting. Daffron sets the story in the 1990s, but there doesn't seem to be any reason for that, as it barely differs from today (no cell phones seems to be the only difference). I believe it's set somewhere in the west, but she never gives any clues as to where, except when one character needs to fly "down south," which, as it turns out, is Las Vegas. The main characters have insta-love and are pretty much TSTL (if you're allergic to cats you can NOT live in a house with 4 cats. How does that not compute? Well, when the author makes the allergy magically go away without further mention, I guess it all works out ok), and plot points are arbitrary (spoiler yes, it turns out the major plot development revolves around the main character's heretofore unknown adoption. Soap opera ca. 1965, right?). It's not an offensively bad book, it's just blah, and not worth the time to read.

Review by Author Roy Murry

Not being an animal lover; I like other people's dogs and cats. Taking care of one is a tremendous responsibility, and you have to be a big-hearted person to be able to love and care for nine.

In Chez Stinky, Ms. Daffron's protagonist Kat, not to be confused with Cat, which she has one called Murphee, receives a call that is a life changer. Because of the death of her great aunt, she inherits four dogs and five cats that live in a country house.

It is a daunting task, to say the least. Katherine takes a vacation from her dead-end city job to visit what seems to be an unpleasant situation - four dogs are everywhere, all the cats are hiding, and the house built into a hill is falling apart. To top off that, the executor of the will doesn't like her.

Kat is a cat person, but when she gets to know the dogs, she falls in love with them. When she locates the cats, life becomes bearable.

Off course a man comes into the situation via the dog walker who was taking care of the animals before Kat arrived. He helps her with minor repairs to the house and her self-esteem which turns into more than anticipated.

The supporting characters, the events that follow, and the small-town ambiance give this first in a series a well-written lead into Kat's and her lover's story. I didn't get the comedy part, but, as I said, I am not an animal lover.

If you are, this is a cute series to read.
If you like romances that are light-hearted and amusing, you will enjoy this- especially if the antics of dogs amuse you!

Events conspire to upend Kat's life, from the boring predictability of a fairly boring apartment and a tedious tech writing job in which she is both overworked and unappreciated. And then- she inherits a house on the outskirts of a small town, which turns out to be falling apart, with a dead "varmint" in the walls lending its perfume, and complete with 9 eccentric animals (4 dogs, 5 cats, though the dogs are more prominent).

Complications ensue since she can only inherit IF her aunt's best friend approves her care of the animals- and she has her own family historical reasons for viewing Kat with a stink-eye.

And then there's Joel...

This was a fun, light romance featuring dogs (mostly), and will appeal to anyone who wants a breezy read.
Kat is a strong even tempered woman.
Joel is a laid back geek.
