Spitfire and Hurricane fighter pilots recount their experiences of combat during the Battle of Britain. 2,927 aircrew of RAF Fighter Command fought and won the Battle of Britain in 1940, 544 lost their lives in action. They flew to battle in Spitfires and Hurricanes, Defiants and Blenheims, although it is the two former fighter types - single-seaters both - that still inspire and capture our imagination. The legendary legless fighter 'ace' Douglas Bader once said that the Battle of Britain was 'not won by a few aces, but by the average squadron pilot who collectively did their bit.' One of those men, Peter Fox, described himself and his fellows as mere 'also rans' - but clearly, without them, Fighter Command could not have prevailed. In this book, Dilip Sarkar relates their stories, researched through personal interviews, correspondence and contemporary archive material. Many of the pilots featured became 'aces' in the Battle of Britain, others achieved such status afterwards whilst others went into action only to be instantly blasted out of the sky without even having seen the enemy. Their collective experience, however, is typical of those who flew Spitfires and Hurricanes in 1940.

Dull. Very little to hold ones interest. Stock photos that one can get anywhere on the net.

I have a large collection of WW2 war and aviation books. This one is the worst of the lot by far.
In fact I will not be adding it to my library. I will most likely throw it away...that is if my round file will accept it.

Last of the Few 18 Battle of Britain Fighter Pilots Tell Their Extraordinary Stories eBook Dilip Sarkar Reviews

Sadly, of the 2,900+ aircrew who fought in the 1940 Battle of Britain, scarcely 100 are alive today. Over the past 25 years, noted British author Dilip Sarkar corresponded with/interviewed dozens of BoB aircrew. Using that wealth of material, Sarkar showcases 18 Hurricane or Spitfire Battle of Britain pilots in LAST OF THE FEW, a 2010 Amberley Publishing release. It is a wonderfully entertaining, evocative tale of determined young men giving their all in the most momentous air battle in history.

After a brief history of the RAF and pre-war developments, Sarkar details the life and combat careers of 18 of Dowding's 'Young Chicks' who saved England and the world in 1940. The pilots served with a variety of squadrons, some of which enjoyed great success while others were decimated by their Luftwaffe opponents. Some pilots like Peter Brothers and 'Grumpy' Unwin made ace. Others scored one or two kills or none at all. Several were shot down; a fair number were wounded.

Their collective experiences provide a vivid and often poignant portrait of young men, many just 19 or 20, launching themselves time after time in harm's way. Reading the first-person reminiscences in LAST OF THE FEW, it's fascinating how matter-of-fact and unassuming those men are in relating their exploits. Indeed, when Sarkar talked to one of the pilots about the immeasurable debt owed to 'the Few,' the pilot simply replied 'Oh, I think that's a bit much.'

There have been and will be a number of BoB books coming out in this 70th anniversary year. In this reviewer's opinion, LAST OF THE FEW is one of the very best to appear thus far. It puts a very human face on those long-ago warriors who scrambled from Duxford, Kenley, North Weald, Middle Wallop, Hornchurch and other bases to face Hitler's Luftwaffe. Recommended.
I liked the book, but found it very similar to another book with a similar title by Max Arthur. Both books have similar formats consisting of short anecdotal blurbs from each pilot. To get the story of any one particular pilot the reader must piece together the various pages of that person. However, as a view of military history from that particular battle, the book does well in addressing a variety of topics the pilots involved found pertinent to their lives.
